Best Community Theater: Theatre Charlotte
“Beauty and The Beast Jr.” and “Young Frankenstein” are two July productions being performed at Theatre Charlotte. The nonprofit has a goal to make theater popular in the mainstream and judging by the hundreds of volunteers that make their productions possible to the thousands of audience members they see a year, Theatre Charlotte is getting the job done.

Best Live Music Venue: The Fillmore
Themed in the tradition of the world famous Fillmore in San Francisco, this old textile mill has become a Charlotte staple. The little venue produces big sound with its state-of-the-art system. And the red oak floors, red-painted interior and collection of chandeliers and vintage posters add to the allure. Check out the Road to Grungefest of July 13 or the Tupac vs. Biggie night July 19.

Best Local Museum: Harvey B Gantt Center
The Harvey B. Gantt Center is a mecca for African-American arts and culture. The center preserves and celebrates excellence in the culture, history and art of African-Americans and people of African descent. The center’s goal is to inspire and start conversations and they accomplish that. They have Fine Arts Fridays and a week-long Hip Hop Tech Camp: The Roots and STEM of Rap, a writing and technology camp for students in grades 6-12.

Best Art Gallery: Bechtler Museum of Modern Art
The Bechtler collection is predominantly made up of mid-20th-century modern art, but the more than 1,400 works are presented in many forms by many leading artists. You could spend the entire day browsing the stunning collections, some of which have personal effects such as letters or illustrations showing a connection to the Bechtler family. The museum is open every day except Tuesday.

Best Historical Site: The President James K. Polk State Historic Site
Home to the birthplace of America’s 11th president, the site offers guided tours of the historic cabins that have been preserved pristinely. There is also an interesting museum with artifacts of the time, an informative video on the site and the land, a nature trail, historically inspired kitchen garden and a picnic area. The site is home to many special events including Bubble Day on Aug. 10.
