Harrison UMC welcomes two new staff members

Harrison United Methodist Church is welcoming two new faces to the church staff.

The church recently announced Bryant Johnson will start his service as a part-time director of youth ministries on Feb. 1. Johnson, 37, was born in Gainesville, Fla., and has more than 16 years of youth leadership experience, according to a church announcement. He’s served at several churches in Florida and most recently served as Myers Park United Methodist Church’s director of youth spiritual formation.

Harrison also recently welcomed Jennifer Austin as its new pianist. Austin has served as adjunct professor of piano, staff accompanist and director of the Winthrop Piano Academy at Winthrop University, as well as director of music at Riverview Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill, S.C., and associate worship director at Stough Memorial Baptist Church in Pineville. She received her master’s in music with a concentration in piano performance from Appalachian State University, according to a church announcement.

Song Circle event at The Well

The Well Church & Coffeehouse will host its monthly Song Circle event on Jan. 28, a Tuesday, from 7 to 10 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Song Circle gives local songwriters and musicians the chance to connect with each other “with an eye toward collaboration,” according to a church announcement. Song Circle isn’t a formal open mic event, but an informal gathering for music lovers to share their passion with others. It is held the fourth Tuesday evening of each month.

Original songs and cover tunes are welcome. Musicians wishing to perform a “sing-a-long” song are invited to bring 10 to 20 lyric sheets with chord notations.

Pineville UMC launches women’s study, helps local children

Pineville United Methodist Church is launching a study for women called “The Christ-Centered Woman” on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m. in the church’s Stacy Hall. Contact Elaine Treece at for more information about this six-week study.

The church is dedicating its January love offering to the Pineville UMC Backpack Ministry. The program is a joint effort between Pineville and Harrison United Methodist churches and provides weekend meals to children in need at Pineville Elementary School.

Special events, ministry opportunity at Stough Memorial

Stough Memorial Baptist Church’s Just Older Youth, or JOY, Club will host a potluck dinner on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. in the church fellowship

The free event is open to anyone 55 and older. People are encouraged to bring a side dish with enough food for themselves and at least one other person. Chicken legs, drinks, bread and dessert will be provided. Email jje for more information.

The church also is asking people to save the date for its upcoming Grace in Marriage Valentine event, scheduled for Feb. 8, a Saturday, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the church. Find more information at

Stough is offering a ministry opportunity for people who have an interest in care and support for individuals and families dealing with Alzheimer’s disease.
