The Lions are starting their varsity program this season, but have three years of football with a JV schedule, so they’re not starting totally from scratch. They should be competitive, but life in the CISAA, arguably the state’s toughest private-school football conference, will likely be a challenge.
Covenant Day is excited about 6-foot-5 receiver Jackson Bertelsen, an Army baseball commit, and H-back Edwin Barnes. They will likely be the team’s two top playmakers.
Expect Tim Cotton, Jake Peterson, Marc Montgerard, Tim Rossi, Matthew Chestnut, Josh Lee and Nicko Henderson to also be in the mix at receiver.
Nich Prevette will be the lead running back, but guys like Nate Smith and Ben Blackard will get reps.
Robert Stone appears to be the front runner at quarterback.
Up front, David Billiard will lead a line that will include Will Turner, Josh Wallace, Sam Peterson, Ford Hiller, Drew Kury and Connor Westover.
The Lions will have a bunch of two-way guys. Billiard, Henderson, Turner, Kury, Wallace, Peterson, Hiller and Westover will form a rotation up front.
Ben Walton and Prevette are team leaders at linebacker and will play alongside Nate Smith, Seth Shannon, Chestnut, Rossi and Blackard among others.
The secondary could be good with Bertelsen and Barnes at the safeties.
Cotton, Lee, Alex Rintamaa, Alex King and Montgerard will be in the mix at corner.
Tessa Westover will handle at least some of the kicking duties. Guys like Henderson and Barnes could see time returning kicks, although many others are capable.
