NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Charlotte native Austin Proehl is among 146 nominees for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
The team honors off-the-field community service among college football players. Proehl, a graduate of Providence High School, plays for the UNC Tar Heels.
Some of Proehl’s community service includes:
- Visiting UNC Children’s Hospital and UNC bone marrow unit, often leading teammates to go with him.
- Reading with and mentoring elementary school students.
- Participating in the UNC Pen Pal Program and inviting students to visit a practice or UNC football center.
“After looking at the bios of the 146 nominees we received for 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, it really shows that there are great football student-athletes all over this country who just don’t care what happens between the sidelines, but they also care about their community and giving back to others,” Todd Berry, executive director for the American Football Coaches Association.
The roster of 22 winners will be announced in September.
