Prolific Hawks win Nation Ford volleyball tournament

Chalk up another tournament title for the Charlotte Latin volleyball team.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Hawks, who’ve won eight consecutive state championships, took home the title at the Nation Ford Invitational in Fort Mill, S.C.

Charlotte Latin didn’t drop a set during the tournament, beating Spring Valley (S.C.), Fort Mill (S.C.) and North Augusta (S.C.) in pool play.

The Hawks took the quarterfinal match from Spring Valley, the semifinal from Charlotte Catholic and clinched the title in the finals over South Carolina private-school powerhouse Porter Gaud – all in straight sets.

Hawks Eve Davis and Emma Price made the all-tournament team. Davis finished the day with 86 kills, 43 digs and nine aces, while Price had 122 assists, 34 digs and nine aces.

Other Charlotte Latin standouts included Kellie Williams (38 kills, 48 digs, nine aces); Lily Beck (18 digs, four aces), Brooke Brown (32 digs, 13 kills) and Chandler Dalton (12 digs).

On the season, Charlotte Latin has a 29-1 record, including a 4-0 mark in the Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association.

Bucs field hockey team still unbeaten

On Sept. 27, the Charlotte Country Day field hockey team won its 11th consecutive game of the season by downing Forsyth Country Day, 4-0.

Princess Sutherland, Madison Letts, Ali Gakenheimer and Lauren McFayden knocked in goals for the Bucs. Meanwhile, Shannon Baker was in goal for the shutout.

The victory over Forsyth Country Day pushed the Bucs’ record to 11-0, however, they tied with traditionally strong East Chapel Hill High, 0-0, in a Sept. 28 game, making their mark 11-0-1.
