In the opening South Charlotte Weekly Game of the Week of the 2012 season, Charlotte Catholic made short work of non-conference neighbor South Mecklenburg. The Cougars took a 41-0 victory over the Sabres, as junior running back/linebacker/man child Elijah Hood scored three first-half touchdowns and sat out the bulk of the final two quarters.
Now, the Cougars travel to Providence High for South Charlotte Weekly’s second Game of the Week of the season.
Maybe, just maybe, this one will have a little more drama in it.
Providence (1-0) is coming off a Week 1 win over Hopewell in which the Panthers had a key defensive stop late in the game to produce their first season-opening victory since 2006, when they upended Vance, 45-21.
Charlotte Catholic (1-0), meanwhile, is looking to continue its strong play against teams from the Southwestern 4A conference. Over the past three seasons, the Cougars have won six of their last seven games against the Southwestern 4A, which traditionally is widely considered the best league in the state. The last defeat came against East Mecklenburg in 2009.
However, Charlotte Catholic has posted three consecutive victories over Providence, which will be led by senior quarterback James Haigh in this year’s matchup. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Hood will be aided in the backfield by senior Alex Sabates, who had two touchdowns last week against South Meck; junior Drew Tomsho, who scored on a 59-yard jaunt; and Zack Gabriel.
