Area relay teams sprint to gold medals, too
Three south Charlotte relay teams snared state championships while competing in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3A meet at Charlotte Country Day School on May 19.
The host Country Day boys 4×100-meter relay team of Akanimo Eyo, States Lee, William Roberts and Byron Smith won the gold medal in 43.86 seconds.
The Bucs were just ahead of second-place Charlotte Latin (44.97), which included Tristan Gordon, Allan Tate, Spencer Ball and Ty Smith.
In the boys 4×200, Charlotte Latin came out on top, with Cameron Hightower, Ball, Tyler Mott and Ty Smith taking gold in 1 minute, 32.44 seconds. That time was just ahead of Country Day’s Roberts, Byron Smith, Court Haworth and Jackson Goode (1:32.77), and Providence Day’s Bryon Fields, Haamid Williams, Dan McCauley and Charlie Sowers (1:33.10).
Providence Day won the girls 4×800, led by Emma Brown, Amanda McFeeley, Hannah Wilson and Niki Plaus with a time of 9:48.28. Charlotte Latin’s Claire Pace, Laura Gill, Katie McDowell and Tricia Murphy were third (10:10.61).
Charlotte Latin awarded Nike softball camp site
The Nike softball camp, a tour for players ages 6-18, chose Charlotte Latin School as a site on its nationwide schedule. Charlotte Latin will host the Nike camp July 9-13.
Hawks coach Eric Smith will be the camp’s director. At the Nike camp, players are broken into groups of similar ages, skill and goals.
