South Division sees third-highest crime increase

But total number of crimes still lowest in city

by Mike Parks

The South Division of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, which covers the neighborhoods south of Fairview Road, saw an 8 percent increase in crime over the first half of the year when compared to the first half of 2011. But the area still saw fewer crimes so far this year than any other division.

It’s the third highest increase in crime by percentage in the city, behind the Central and Metro divisions. Though at 971 total crimes so far this year, the division has the least amount of crimes to have taken place.

The South Division saw an increase in larcenies, like car break-ins and shoplifting, and a decrease in home break-ins. The Providence Division, which in part covers SouthPark, Foxcroft and Cotswold, saw more home break-ins but less car break-ins.
