Officials at SouthPark Mall are scrambling to get things back to normal after last week’s storms and heavy rain caved in part of the popular south Charlotte destination’s roof.
The deluge of rain dumped on south Charlotte Friday afternoon, July 20, caused a section of the mall’s roof to give way, damaging some stores like Banana Republic and Gap and letting water spread freely throughout the center. The mall was evacuated but no one was reported as injured.
Mall officials hoped to have most stores open for business on Tuesday, but damage in spots proved too severe for that. Instead, SouthPark targeted Wednesday for reopening most stores in the mall. According to a statement from the mall, around 100 of the 180 stores and restaurants listed on the mall’s website were supposed to open on Wednesday.
No timeline has been given for when the remaining stores will open. Banana Republic and Gap were not on the list of those stores opening back up, though the list includes Belk, Dillard’s, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom department stores and shops around those wings, as well as locations near the mall’s main entrance, like American Apparel, GNC and Starbucks. The list also includes the Food Court and restaurants around the mall campus.
“Mall traffic at SouthPark remains brisk as we continue to welcome shoppers to the center,” reads a statement from the mall. “We would like to thank the community for its support and patience throughout this process.”
SouthPark Mall is located at 4400 Sharon Road. Find more information and updates on what stores are open at the mall’s website, www.simon.com/mall/?id=788.
People also can get updates on the mall’s fan page, at www.facebook.com/southparkmallnc, where mall patrons have been keeping up a running dialogue with mall officials trying to figure out when their favorite stores will reopen. One customer asked Wednesday morning when to expect Abercombie and Hollister to open, with a mall representative answering, “Abercrombie and Hollister were both having work done. However, if they are able to open they can.”
A representative from Lily Pulitzer at SouthPark said their store will likely open on Thursday, July 26, and people claiming to speak on behalf of other stores also are updating their business’ status on the mall’s Facebook page.
