South Mecklenburg High School’s performing arts department will present the musical “Bye Bye Birdie,” Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 19 through 21, at 7 p.m. at the school, 8900 Park Road. The group will perform Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m.
The musical is a culmination of the theater, band, choral and orchestra departments to showcase student-produced music, acting, dancing and student-built sets. The performance is the school’s entry in the inaugural Blumey Awards, a high school theater award program sponsored by Wells Fargo and Blumenthal Performing Arts.
Originally titled “Let’s Go Steady,” the production is a satire on American society set in 1958. The story was inspired by the phenomenon of Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957, a news release said.
Tickets for the show are $10 for adults and students, $5 for children 10 and younger and will be sold at the door 30 minutes before each show time.
