Nearly 19,000 students were assigned to magnet programs in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools through the first student-assignment lottery.
CMS received 8,000 individual lottery applications through the online process and a total of 18,791 students were assigned to a magnet school, including students who are currently enrolled in magnet programs and will automatically continue in those programs.
Families should have received notification last week informing parents of their child’s placement school through the lottery process and how to ask for reassignment.
Around 3,500 applicants were assigned to magnet schools’ wait pools because more students applied than there are available seats. South Charlotte’s Park Road Montessori School has one of the largest wait pools in the district, with 300 students waiting on seats to open up.
Schools can access their wait pools in July, contacting wait pool students if magnet seats become available.
Families who are unhappy with their child’s placement can request reassignment by March 23 through the district’s website, www.cms.k12.nc.us, or apply to a magnet school with open seats available during the second magnet lottery, March 14 through June 4. Families with students enrolled for the 2012-13 school year also can participate in this lottery. Magnet program seat information is available online.
CMS will mail instruction letters on how to apply in mid-March.
